Velocity Credit Union Awards Scholarships To Graduating Area SeniorsVelocity Credit Union awarded a total of $11,250 in scholarships to eight Austin-area students pursuing their educations at the 23rd Annual Velocity Credit Union Scholarship Awards. Four scholarships were presented to high school graduating seniors beginning their college education, and another four were presented to past winners who are currently in college. Over the life of the program, the credit union has awarded 136 scholarships totaling more than $170,000.

This year, the recipient of the Royal G. Wilson Memorial Scholarship was Sofia Ramirez, a graduate of Akins High School who will begin studying engineering at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn. this fall. Nzubechi Uzuegbunam, who graduated from Manor High School, received the Tom Eaton Memorial Scholarship. Uzuegbunam is planning to study biology at Texas A&M University.

This year, two graduating seniors were awarded the Limuel Hunter Memorial Scholarship: Bailey Penberg, who graduated from Cedar Park High School and enters pre-veterinary studies at Texas State University this fall; and Lehman High School graduate Jonathan Sheckler, who will study manufacturing engineering at ACC/Coastal Bend College.

Velocity’s Board of Directors also awards the Robert Wilder Memorial Scholarship to assist past winners in continuing their education. This year, four scholarships were awarded to the following previous winners: Thomas Massad from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.; Jorge Reynoso, who attends Denison University in Ohio; Gabriel Borg from the University of Texas; and Summer Stark, who attends the University of North Texas.

“This scholarship program has been a proud tradition of Velocity for 23 years. This year’s recipients represent the best of Texas youth and we are thrilled to be able to help them pursue their educational goals,” said Debbie Mitchell, president and CEO.
