Velocity Credit Union Awards Eight Local Students At 18th Annual Scholarship Ceremony

Velocity Credit Union recently held its 18th Annual Velocity Credit Union Scholarship Awards where it presented eight scholarships to young credit union members. Three scholarships were awarded to recent high school graduates and five ongoing scholarships were awarded to past winners who are continuing their college education. Velocity Credit Union has awarded $120,000 in scholarships to date.

The Royal G. Wilson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jasmine Washington, a graduate of Manor High School, who will attend the University of Texas at Austin. The Limuel Hunter Scholarship was awarded to Alexander Jaycox, a graduate of James Bowie High School, who plans to attend Texas A&M University. Laura Longnecker, a graduate of Pflugerville High School, was awarded the Tom Eaton Memorial Scholarship and she plans to attend Texas A&M University in the fall.

The Robert Wilder Memorial Scholarships, which were created by Velocity’s Board of Directors to assist current college students, were awarded to five past winners: Carlos Galvan, who attends St. Edward’s University; Emily Jaso, from Sam Houston State University; Jozef Cortez, who continues at Hardin-Simmons University; Michael Massad, from Carleton College; and Katie Jaycox, who attends Northwestern University.

“These are all amazing young people and we believe that they are on their way to making their mark in the world,” said Debbie Mitchell, Velocity Credit Union president and CEO. “Their hard work and dedication is certainly commendable, and we anticipate great things from each of them in the future.”
