Scammers are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to create more convincing fraud attempts, including deepfake audio and video, and highly targeted messages that appear to come from trusted sources.

These tactics are also spreading across social media, where AI-powered social media bots and AI-powered social media phishing (AI-driven phishing attempts) are used to trick users into sharing personal or financial information.

What to watch for

AI-driven scams may include:

  • Deepfake voice or video messages that mimic a family member, coworker, or financial institution
  • Urgent requests for money or personal information that feel emotionally charged
  • Messages from social media accounts that appear real but are actually AI powered social media bots
  • Fake customer support or “security alerts” designed to pressure you into acting quickly
  • Links or messages used in AI-powered social media phishing attempts to steal login credentials
  • Requests for sensitive data such as passwords, verification codes, or account numbers

Even when messages look or sound real, scammers rely on urgency and trust to manipulate their targets.

How to protect yourself

  • Slow down. Urgency is a major warning sign.
  • Verify independently. Contact the person or organization using a known, trusted number or website.
  • Never share one-time passcodes or passwords. Velocity Credit Union will never request them.
  • Be cautious on social media. Bots and fake accounts can look surprisingly real.
  • Think before you click. Avoid links in unexpected messages or Direct Messages.
