Frequently Asked EMV Chip Card Questions

Take a look at these frequently asked questions about the new Velocity chip cards.

General Information

What is an EMV chip card?

Cards with embedded EMV computer chips are more secure as they are extremely difficult to counterfeit. They contain all the information encoded into the magnetic strips on your traditional cards, but in a more secure fashion.

What do they do?

EMV chipInstead of transmitting your personal or account information during a transaction, the system generates a unique, one-time code that is useless to identity thieves.

Why are Velocity’s cards changing?

EMV chip cards provide our members and the credit union with stronger security and protection against fraud. The technology is already being used in more than 130 countries. Fraud from lost and stolen cards was reduced by 50-percent when chip cards were adopted in the U.K.

Where can I use my new Velocity chip card?

Use your card anywhere in the U.S or abroad that accepts debit cards. Please note: Not all merchants are ready for debit chip cards.

What if I find a terminal without a chip reader?

Don’t worry. Your Velocity chip card still has a magnetic stripe for use at merchants unprepared for EMV chip-reading technology.

How about ATMs?

Use your new chip card at an ATM just as you would at any chip-ready terminal: Insert your card into the reader face-up and chip-first. Leave it there throughout your transaction and follow any prompts on-screen (if you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be canceled). When prompted, remove your card and receipt.
