The top-paying job in Texas is a snooze

pinpointed the highest-paying job in Texas … and it just might put you to sleep.

Anesthesiologists – doctors who provide general and regional anesthetics, or sedation, to ensure the safety of and prevent pain for patients undergoing surgery – took home an average of $261,670 annually in 2017, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Interestingly, Texas gets the short end of the sedation stick. Anesthesiologists in Arizona, Florida, New York and Ohio all earn more, while California practitioners top the list with an average wage of $283,860.

I once thought about becoming an anesthesiologist, but I decided to sleep on it.

Medical occupations including general practitioners, internists, obstetricians and gynecologists, pharmacists, psychiatrists, and surgeons lead the wage race in most states. Non-medical jobs that are tops in their states include airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers ($237,590 annually in Washington); chief executives ($236,010, Washington, D.C.); and financial managers ($119,240, North Dakota). If you dream of being an operations manager, head to South Dakota where, on average, you’d earn $123,310 (more than twice the national average for the job!).
